Coveris Winsford has launched a recycling education programme with Wharton CE Primary School, Winsford and construction company, Lane End Group, as part of the manufacturer’s own annual No Waste Week.

Committed to its vision of No Waste, Coveris’ Green Teams, made up of volunteers committed to reducing waste, constantly look for new ways to promote sustainability. Coveris Winsford’s Green Team begun working with Wharton CE Primary School as a part of Coveris’ No Waste Week in 2021, building an immersive reflection garden to teach the children about the importance of looking after the environment. After seeing the garden’s success and the children’s enthusiasm to learn, Coveris Winsford continued building its relationship with the school.

As the UK’s largest extruder of recyclable polyethylene (PE) films for the packaging industry, Coveris Winsford wanted to show its commitment to developing recyclable and recycled films. For No Waste Week 2022, Coveris Winsford decided to create recycling education programme with the school to continue developing the children into the next generation of sustainability warriors.
Working with Wharton CE Primary School and local construction company, Lane End, Coveris Winsford has developed an informative video teaching the children about the journey the school’s flexible plastic packaging goes on once put into the recycling bin. The film shows the children about how the school’s flexible plastic waste is extruded at Coveris Winsford and is then turned into damp proof membrane for Lane End Group to use. As part of this collaboration, Lane End even held a competition for the students to name one of the streets which had used the newly produced damp proof membrane.

Soon, Coveris Winsford’s Green Team will head back to Wharton CE Primary School to showcase the video to the children, and it will form part of the school’s curriculum.

Karl Dawkins, a member of Coveris Winsford’s Green Team, said, “It’s great to get the kids involved and do something a bit different for our annual No Waste Week. By showing the kids the complete recycling process, we’re able to educate colleagues, kids and communities and build a more sustainable future. We hope that our continued work with the school pays off and helps the local community to see the importance of recycling.”

Natalie Tomlinson, Wharton CE Primary School’s Headteacher, commented, “We are very grateful to have had the opportunity to work again with Coveris this year.  It has been a pleasure and real learning experience for the children. Not only highlighting the need to recycle, but to understand the journey that takes place when soft plastic items are recycled and the positive impact this can have. The children have gained a real insight into recycling and to see a ‘start to finish’ project linked with Lane End has been fantastic. The filming process has also been a fun learning experience for the children and they have really risen to the challenge. We are really looking forward to sharing the final result within the community.”
